Hurricane Irene Survivors |
Hurricane Irene caused massive destruction up and down the East Coast in August 2011 and wound up by most estimates as one of the ten most destructive and deadly hurricanes to hit the United States since 1980. The Outer Banks and remote Hatteras Island were especially hard-hit and cut off from the mainland after floodwaters sliced through the only highway onto the island. |

Hatteras Island was the home to many colonies of feral and semi-feral cats as well as those cats of permanent residents of the island. Hurricane Irene destroyed not only property but also the lives and homes of these wonderful animals. Through the monumental efforts of an incredible resident of the island, many of these cats were rescued after the hurricane and transported to groups who were able to accept the now-homeless kitties.
With the assistance of the Cat Fancier's Association clubs Pawprints on the Sand and Chamberlain by the Bay eight of these survivors attended at cat show in Newport News Virginia on 4 February to try to find their forever homes. Four of these cats are now with their new guardians and are doing well ... four of these very special cats are still available for adoption. |

Nermal was one of the first survivors ferried off Hatteras Island. He was probably one of the many feral kittens that lived there before the hurricane and suffered emotional and physical trauma during the storm. Nermal is not yet available for adoption - he still has a long way to go before he's recovered but I do believe he's very happy with the expert nursing care that his Mommy Tammy provides |
